James Smolko to perform at Art Reach of Mid Michigan, “Let’s Do Lunch” Noon - 1:00pm
Art Reach of Mid Michigan welcomes back pianist James Smolko for their September “Let’s Do Lunch” event with another of his “Piano Varieties” concerts. This program will feature piano solos, recorded music by popular musicians and narration.
Smolko will perform Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, from noon to 1 p.m. The performance will be held in the newly expanded gallery at Art Reach on Broadway at 111 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant.
Smolko taught piano at CMU’s School of Music from 1974 to 1992. Other faculty positions include the International Institute for Chamber Music in Munich and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
“Let’s Do Lunch” is free and open to the public. Audience members are encouraged to bring their own lunch. Dessert will be provided. A “Let’s Do Lunch” event is held the first Wednesday of every month.

CMU's Program Board Hosts Dan Austin 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
CMU's Program Board will host speaker Dan Austin, founder of 88 Bikes, from 7-10 pm September 7 in the University Center Auditorium. Austin co-founded the 88 Bikes project, which endows an orphanage in a different country every year with bicycles, supplies and funds for upkeep. His documentary film "Petionville" explores the lives of Haitian street children, and his award winning film "True Fans" is a documentary about his 1999 mountain bike pilgrimage across America. CMU Presents Music Alumni Randall Hawes 4:00pm
CMU presents Music Alumni Randall Hawes of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and George Curran of the Atlanta Symphony in concert at 4 p.m. September 12 in the Music Building's Staples Family Concert Hall. Together with guest artist pianist Kathryn Goodson, they will present a program of trombone and piano music, including longtime CMU trombone professor William Rivard's "Quadrivalence," which was written for solo bass trombone and dedicated to Randal Hawes.
