In the industry of Bed and Breakfasts every place is unique. They each offer their own character and individualistic style of hospitality. In the Mt. Pleasant area that reigns true for many. One in particular is located a few miles north of town, away from the hustle and bustle. Owned by Jim and Krista Pohl, the Pohl Bison Bed and Breakfast is anything but ordinary.
Inside the Amish built log cabin, visitors take in the classic Michigan countryside. The stone fireplace makes for a welcoming family room, as the gorgeous wooden spiral stair case leads to two comfortable rooms anyone can relax in. A large lofted room is the perfect space to enjoy a cup of coffee and overlook the acreage of the family ranch.
When visiting the Pohl Bison B&B visitors are not only welcomed by the hosting family, but by the bison that graze on the 40 acre land. Jim and Krista Pohl have had a passion for buffalo since a trip to Wyoming many years ago. Today, they raise over 50 bison on their land. Visitors can enjoy watching them from the large decks surrounding the house, or as they warm up close to the fire pit in the back yard.
Starting this year, Pohl Bison will be taking buffalo viewing to the next level by offering bison tours to their guests. “We are planning on starting (the tours) in June and through the fall,” said Krista Pohl. Guests will go for a ride on a renovated covered wagon as they enter the grazing pastures. Once the wagon is in the field the bison walk right up to the wagon becoming inches away from the guests. The Pohl’s even bring buckets of cubed alfalfa treats to toss to the bison.
Guests may also purchase locally packaged bison meat products such as steaks, jerky or sausage or take home a fun buffalo souvenir from the Bison Horn Gift Shop. The gift shop is also open to the public on Friday evenings and Saturday’s.
