Adopt, Don’t Shop

Most of us are familiar with national statistics about animal shelters. The numbers aren’t kind. They are serious. They are real. And without your help, they are going to get worse.

But as a society, what are we doing to change the numbers? Are we adopting? Are we educating? Are we making a conscious effort to work toward solutions?

The Humane Animal Treatment Society (H.A.T.S.) has been hard at work saving the lives of companion animals in mid-Michigan for nearly 20 years. Providing adoption, foster, and volunteer services within mid-Michigan, H.A.T.S. has changed the lives of thousands of homeless animals.

In 2013, H.A.T.S. officially opened a low-cost spay/neuter Health Clinic. This valuable resource seeks to assist community members in their efforts to improve their animal’s health with the apparent benefits of spay/neuter as well as effectively manage pet overpopulation.

On April 30th, animal advocates all across the country celebrate “National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day”. While this day is near and dear to many, by the time you are done reading this article, national statistics suggest that two healthy animals have been euthanized (approximately one animal every thirteen seconds*). This is the unfortunate reality of a society which is plagued by uncontrolled breeding and sometimes irresponsible pet ownership.

So, what can you do? How can you help? The answer is simple – start by doing something:

Adopt – Visit an animal shelter. Speak with adoption counselors. Find your perfect match. The rest is history.

Foster – Can’t commit for the long-term? Fostering is a wonderful option. You can offer an animal a safe space.

Volunteer – Provide enrichment for animals. Help staff with their daily routine. You are appreciated.

Educate – Have conversations – with friends, co-workers, neighbors, heck, even complete strangers!

Donate – Animal shelters rely on donations in order to function. Every dollar counts.

Volunteer, adopt, foster, educate and donate – whichever you choose, H.A.T.S. is here to help! Celebrate “National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day” by educating others and being a voice for those who do not have one.
