Central Michigan University boasts a rich and storied history of athletic success. The Chippewas remember and honor those who have come before and those who have helped to build the traditions that we carry on to this day.
A chance to see that history on display and to pay homage to it comes the weekend of Oct. 16-17 as six former Chippewa athletic greats and one team will be inducted into the Central Michigan University Marcy Weston Hall of Fame. The official induction ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in McGuirk Arena. There is no admission charge and the event is open to the public.
The inductees will also be introduced during halftime at the Central Michigan-Buffalo football game on the following day at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
The hall and the athletic program as a whole is yet another shining example of the connection between CMU, the alumni, student body, faculty and the community. In the fall, campus is booming with pride for the university and athletics as well. There is nothing like a fall Saturday afternoon at Kelly/Shorts Stadium: the tailgates, the sea of maroon and gold, the marching band and all the festivities.
Adding to the excitement around campus and in the community is first-year football coach John Bonamego, a former Chippewa player and a CMU alum whose deep love for the university and all of its wonderful traditions is clearly evident in his dealings with anyone and everyone in and around CMU.
CMU greats who will enter the hall next week include baseball player Scott MacGregor, wrestler Chris Marshall, football player Matt Means, softball player Amber (Puchalski) Darracq, gymnast Kara (Reighard) Schuette, field hockey player Janel Spero, and the 1974-75 men’s basketball team, which won the Mid-American Conference championship and won a first-round NCAA Tournament game over Georgetown.
The hall and spirited athletics program is just another layer of rich and proud tradition that is CMU and the entire surrounding community. Fire up Chips!
