Special Olympics Michigan June 1st-3rd, 2017
Mount Pleasant is home to the Annual Special Olympics Summer Games. Since 1971, Central Michigan University has played host for the state games, even hosting the Special Olympics World Games in 1975. The games bring together nearly 3,000 Special Olympic athletes from across the state to compete in 10 summer sporting events. The games start off with the ceremonial lighting of the Flame of Hope during the Opening Ceremonies. The torch is run from the Capital in Lansing to Mt. Pleasant in the traditional Capitol Steps Kick-off Torch Lighting Ceremony. Opening Ceremonies also include a Coast Guard flyover provided by United States Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City. Athletes, coaches, families, volunteers and the community will celebrate as the competitions get underway.
The ten types of competition offered at the State Summer Games each year include aquatics, bocce, bowling, gymnastics, horseshoes, power lifting, weightlifting, volleyball, developmental athletics and motor activities training program.
Athletes compete in State Summer Games after qualifying at local competitions throughout the year. The State Summer Games are one of eight annual statewide competitions for the athletes of Special Olympics. The Special Olympics Michigan programs are offered at no cost to the athletes or their families, truly bringing the Mt. Pleasant and surround communities together.
